GHG Report for Warren Wilson College
Submitted on January 27, 2012; last updated on March 8, 2012
Summary Statistics
Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.| Total | Per Full-Time Enrollment | Per 1000 Square Feet | % Offset | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2) | 4,814 metric tons of CO2e | 5.2 metric tons of CO2e | 7.4 metric tons of CO2e | 44% |
| Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2 + 3) | 7,591 metric tons of CO2e | 8.2 metric tons of CO2e | 11.6 metric tons of CO2e | 28% |
| Net emissions | 5,484 metric tons of CO2e | 6.0 metric tons of CO2e | 8.4 metric tons of CO2e | N/A |
Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries
| Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report | July 1, 2010 |
| Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries | Operational control approach |
|
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.
Yes -- rental housing is omitted, as utilities are not paid for by the college in these buildings. |
|
| Emissions calculation tool used | Clean Air-Cool Planet |
|
Please describe why this tool was selected.
It is the most comprehensive tool found. |
|
|
Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.
CA-CP Campus Carbon Calculator's default emissions coefficients. |
|
| Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? | Fourth Assessment Report |
| Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? | Student researcher(s) |
|
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.
Student researchers are utilized as part of the Warren Wilson College work program, in which all resident students work 15 hours a week for the college in some form. One or more members of the Campus Greening Crew, a part of the Environmental Leadership Center at Warren Wilson, are responsible for compiling the Greenhouse Gas Inventory for the college each year (starting with a 2004-2005 school year report). Data is gathered from other work crews, staff, faculty, and from the natural gas and electricity bills. The process is organized and directed by the sustainability office staff. |
