GHG Report for Jackson Community College

Submitted on January 11, 2009; last updated on January 27, 2010

Summary Statistics

Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.

Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries

Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report September 1, 2007
Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries Operational control approach
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.

The scope of this carbon emissions inventory only included the college’s main campus in Jackson, MI. It would have been more comprehensive of a study to include our two satellite campuses however, considering the main campus includes 92% of operations, I believe I have captured the majority of the college’s carbon emissions.

Emissions calculation tool used Clean Air-Cool Planet
Please describe why this tool was selected.

CA-CP appears to be the most widely used and it is free.

Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.

No information provided

Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? No information provided
Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? Sustainability office staff
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.

A variety of sources at the college were used for collecting the data required to complete the emissions report. Specifically, past electricity and natural gas utility bills were the most informative and time-consuming source for the inventory. The Financial Services, Institutional Research, Vice President’s Office, and Facilities departments were exceptionally helpful throughout the data gathering phase of the inventory.
External sources of information were helpful when was requested. Emmons Waste Services, Consumers Energy, and surveys sent out to faculty, staff, and students make up the majority of information used in the inventory.
Additionally, when data was unavailable, estimates were substituted into the calculator for historical years to allow for trend analysis. Aside from the commuter survey, where actual numbers are unattainable, no estimates were used for the 2007-2008 year.

Please describe any emissions sources that were classified as de minimis and explain how a determination of the significance of these emissions was made.
