The Clean Air - Cool Planet Carbon Calculator is an accessible and effective tool for estimating campus greenhouse gas emissions. It offers a guide for what data to seek, and it easily translates that data into total campus emissions. Also, many other institutions--some comparable in size and scope to Ohio University--have used the Carbon Calculator to estimate their emissions.

The Clean Air - Carbon Calculator served as a guide for data collection. A greenhouse gas inventory seminar during Fall Quarter, 2007 charged a group of students with data searching, compiling, and analyzing, and they produced a comprehensive and insightful document that was built upon by Office of Sustainability staff as well as other employees in Facilities Management.

In calculating OHIO’s emissions from transportation:
• Not enough data is available to estimate emissions from student commuters. The large majority of student parking permits are issued to students who live on campus, but that does not mean there are no significant emissions resulting from student commuters. In this inventory emissions from student commuters are not estimated.
• Records of university purchased flights only go back to 1998, so no emissions from air travel are estimated from before that time. The records that do exist do not always include flight destination or miles flown, so the average distance of a flight is estimated from the available data. That average is applied to every university purchased flight in order to estimate total annual miles flown.
• In order to estimate emissions from faculty/staff commuters, OHIO’s inventory assumes that all faculty and staff drive to campus 5 days per week, 30 weeks per year. The average distance of the commute is based on faculty/staff home zip codes.
In calculating emissions from electricity purchased from AEP:
• OHIO’s inventory applies the annual electric fuel mixes supplied by the Carbon Calculator from the ECAR Ohio Valley Region. These fuel mixes are likely somewhat different from the actual AEP fuel mixes.
