Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

Yes: The Governor of New York, as part of Executive Order 111, has mandated that all new construction meet the LEED Silver standard. The New York State Construction Fund has complied by incorporating the LEED Silver standard into all new building construction. Alfred State College will meet or exceed this mandate. Alfred State College is working with the National Association of Homebuilders to teach our Building Trades students Green Building Standards and have constructed a model Green Home on our Wellsville campus.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: Effective September 1, 2010, the purchasing policy will require the purchase of Energy Star certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

Yes: The Institution will annually determine the amount of airfare paid for by the College and will place an amount equal to 2.5% of the total in a special fund. Alfred State College will use the fund to plant trees, improve cropland, and increase soil organic matter; install capacity to generate renewable energy; purchase and replace fixtures and equipment with more energy efficient models; pay for the safe removal of GHG generating chemicals; and pay for other acceptable carbon offsets. The program will be evaluated at the end of one year and the fee may be revised.

4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.

Yes: Two different public transportation systems serve the campus: Access Allegany and Hornell Area Transit. The College also operates its own public transportation system both on campus and between campuses.

Alfred State College will publicize the availability of these services and encourage their patronage.

5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources.

Yes: Alfred State College currently generates some electricity on its Wellsville campus through solar and wind.

Because Alfred State purchases electricity through a consortium with other ACUPCC signatories, we will be look at collectively bargaining along with other consortium members to get our utilities to meet the targeted goal. Feasibility of biomass, geothermal, and wind are also being explored.

6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested.

Yes: The Institution’s endowment is a managed account and we will communicate the need for such a policy to the account manager when shareholder proposals related to climate and sustainability are considered.

7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: Alfred State College plans to participate in RecycleMania 2011 in the Waste Minimization Competition and is considering the following options:

1. The Center for Organic and Sustainable Agriculture is working with dining service and landscaping crews on campus to increase the amount of compost produced and used.

2. Paper use and disposal will be audited and collection points for paper recycling will be increased accordingly.

3. Move from a commingled to a presorted system for recycling.

4. Make recycling containers more available and more visible in student housing.

5. Partner with Alfred University to identify places that recycle, including the RePo (recycled materials) Center.

6. Set specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely goals to reduce and eliminate landfilled waste and increase recycled waste

7. Start a campus-wide campaign to educate students, faculty and staff about recycling and sustainability.

8. Create a tool lending library to loan surplus tools and equipment to local community members with proper training and liability waivers in place.

9. Encourage the local waste hauler to partner in composting effort.

10. Work with the Management and Sustainability Living Learning Community as well as the Student Sustainability Club to involve students in the process of solving some of our waste issues.

The options will be evaluated and ranked for their potential to best reduce waste generated on the Alfred State College campus.
