7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: Kalamazoo College will continue its annual participation it the Recyclemania contest, competing in various categories including Waste Minimization. In the 2007 competition Kalamazoo College was the only participant to place among the top 10 schools in 5 of the 8 Recyclemania categories.
Kalamazoo College has had a continuous recycling operation since 1988 and a full-time Recycling Coordinator since 1992. The College currently recycles significant portions of the following waste streams: paper, metal, plastics, glass, polystyrene, carpet, wood, concrete, and acoustical ceiling tiles. The Recycling Department also redistributes used campus furniture.
Kalamazoo College is committing to further, significant reductions in the amount of waste it sends to landfills. To achieve this, the College will utilize the following strategies:
1. Complete a multi-year inventory of campus solid waste sent to landfills and use that as a benchmark to set targets for future incremental reductions in the amount of that waste.
2. Create an action plan to improve materials management for campus catering, concessions, and grab and go operations.
3. Investigate the feasibility of improving materials management in the campus bookstore and mail center operations.
4. Invest in and develop systems to compost significant amounts of campus food and yard waste.
5. Create and promote a system that emphasizes the link between the Kalamazoo College Honor Code and sustainable materials management. As part of upholding our Honor System, which commits us to “the respectful and prudent stewardship of our community’s material and natural resources” we will create a system whereby outstanding waste management practices can be nominated for recognition and wasteful practices can be identified and addressed.
5. Incorporate materials management information into the new employee orientation process. This process will match what the College already does for new students.
6. Kalamazoo College is currently engaged in a LEED registered construction project. During the course of this project we have recycled construction waste at a 95% rate. The College will commit to matching that rate on all future construction projects on campus.
