Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

Yes: The University of Wisconsin Sustainable building guidelines and standards are designed to promote and ensure that state facilities are constructed and renovated in a sustainable manner, starting with initial project planning and continuing through occupancy and operation. The Guidelines and Standards address all aspects of the planning, design and construction process.

LEED-EB for DOA Managed Buildings - Through Conserve Wisconsin and Executive Order 145, Governor Doyle has committed Wisconsin to leading by example in improving the energy and environmental performance of existing and new state-owned buildings. By adopting LEED-EB guidelines and implementing sustainable practices in the facilities it owns and leases, the Department of Administration is cutting energy use and conserving resources. Governor Doyle's Executive Order, does not require certification to the US Green Building Council's LEED-EB Green Building Rating System, but contains minimum performance standards based on LEED tools and approaches, as well as measurement and reporting requirements.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: Energy Star purchases have been a campus practice for some time. We have not, however, committed our efforts to policy. Therefore, as part of our overall commitment we will be creating an Energy Star policy for the UW Stevens Point campus.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

Yes: The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), consistent with its desire to encourage innovation and energy conservation and to be a steward of the environment, desires to support the development of renewable generation. UWSP, therefore, agrees to purchase an additional twenty percent (20%) of its annual electrical energy requirement.

6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested.

No: No information provided.

7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has a very active recycling effort. The program recycles Paper/paper products, Plastic, Aluminum and Glass. Our campus surplus operation coordinates the collection, processing and disposal of unneeded or unused surplus property generated on the UWSP campus or from other state agencies. We also have a compost program for green waste and kitchen waste that is diverted from our dining facilities. In addition, we will upgrade our practice of offering reusable mugs/containers in campus dining and convenience locations, establish a system to review and improve placement of recycling containers on campus and implement new (possibly compostable "to-go" food containers in convenience store locations.
